Fancy Fastback: 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe Pricing Revealed

Mercedes-Benz has disclosed pricing for the new GLE Coupe, and while no bargain, it’s actually less of a shocker than you might have anticipated. Benz’s SUV-coupe-crossover conglomerate comes in two AMG-bred variations only: the GLE450 AMG Coupe, and the much wilder AMG GLE63 S. They are priced at $66,025 and $110,225, respectively. How is that a bargain? Read on, and we’ll explain.

Powered by a 362-hp, twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6, the GLE450 AMG Coupe is already a muscular machine, one that makes surprisingly lustful noises when pushed hard. But it’s no match for the ultra-fast AMG GLE63 S Coupe, propelled by a 577-hp, twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8. Both come standard with all-wheel drive.

The entry-level GLE450 AMG Coupe is just $500 more expensive than the regular-body GLE400, which has a less-powerful, 329-hp version of the same engine. And the AMG GLE63 S Coupe commands a modest premium of $2200 (or 2 percent) over its non-coupe sibling.

BMW, by contrast, charges an additional $3400 to $5900 over the equivalent X5 for its similarly coupe-like X6. (2015 X6 prices range from $60,795 for the sDrive35i to $103,195 for the X6 M.) In the marketplace, the GLE Coupe also may be cross-shopped with the more conservative Range Rover Sport and the Tesla Model X—that is, once the Model X finally arrives.

Buyers who are set on a Benz and don’t need the extra trunk space of the regular GLE may well be drawn to the Coupe, since it looks a lot more fresh than the regular GLE, which is little more than a facelifted M-class. And the price premium is fairly minor—at least as far as fancy SUVs go.
