It happened largely by accident, this collection of many, many photos of a veritable pantheon of vintage cars. Being this author’s first trip to see the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance, coworkers and colleagues from other publications alike said attending Dawn Patrol is a must-do, as you get to see all of the Pebble entrants as they sputter and cough their way through a ceremonial checkpoint before the sun even rises, all backdropped by absolutely stunning waterfront scenery. Wake up early enough, and you can photograph every single one before it putters over to its grassy spot on the show field, before eventually being subsumed into a mass of people wearing fancy hats and holding champagne.
Of course, then we had to wake up at 4 a.m. to make this must-make event. The line for doughnuts and coffee stretched longer than that of the cars waiting in line to putt-putt across Pebble Beach’s greens. The Hagerty Insurance Dawn Patrol hats promised to the hardy attendees were passed around, but far away from the staked-out photo spots near where the cars would roll through. Yet from the moment the first car idled through the gate—such an accomplishment!—we had our camera ready, and a bizarre determination compelled us to capture every single one (save for a few that were delayed or faced mechanical troubles). Enjoy—you didn’t even have to wake up before dawn.
