SSS opposes Centre's land acquisition bill - Times of India

PUNE: After Shiv Sena, another ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) on Wednesday openly expressed its opposition to the Union government's Land Acquisition Bill.

SSS leader MP Raju Shetti said: "The government can't ignore the feelings of peasant community, therefore, we will stand with the farmers in their agitation against the bill," Shetti said, adding that his party is not averse to the BJP yet, but would take a call on alliance if the government continued to take 'anti-farmer steps'.

Shetti's resistance is bound to spell trouble for the BJP government in the state as Sena has already criticized chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on various issues, including the murder of rationalist leader Govind Pansare. Though SSS has no members in the state assembly and council, the party could cause harm to BJP's political prospects in the sugar belt, especially in the forthcoming local governing body and co-operative sector elections.

SSS is already agitated with the BJP leadership for not fulfilling promise to accommodate its leader in the state cabinet. During assembly elections, BJP had promised that it would give representation to all its allies in the state government. However, except Shiv Sena, no other alliance partner, including SSS and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, have got ministerial berth in the state cabinet.

Various organisations, supported by Anna Hazare, have already started agitation in Maharashtra and with two of its alliance partners joining the opposition, the BJP government could land in a tight corner.

BJP's state unit president Raosaheb Danve told reporters in Mumbai that his party was in consultation with alliance partners. "I will be meeting the leaders of all our allies to understand their stand on all controversial issues," he said.

On December 29 last year, the government had recommended promulgation of an ordinance making significant changes in the Land Acquisition Act, including removal of consent clause for acquiring land of five areas for industrial corridors, PPP projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence.
