NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Budget "progressive and pragmatic" that will strengthen India's economic capabilities and help fulfil the dreams of the common man. He assured foreign investors about a predictable and fair tax system.

"... Budget with a clear vision. It is a Budget that is progressive, positive, practical, pragmatic & prudent," Modi tweeted soon after the Budget speech. "We are moving with the mantra of 'sabka sath, sabka vikas'," he said.

He appreciated Arun Jaitley for an "inspiring" Budget which will "encourage us to do new things". He said the FM had done well in the balancing act between the aspirations of states and national priorities.

"From housing for all, jobs, health, education and total electrification, FM laid down goals to be achieved by 2022, India's Amrut Mahotsav (75th anniversary)," the PM said.

Modi said the Budget will "further reignite our growth engine, signalling the dawn of a prosperous future", he added.

He said finance minister Arun Jaitley must be congratulated for "this pro-poor, pro-growth, pro-middle class, pro-youth & paradigm shifting Budget".

Modi said the Budget has a distinct focus on farmers, youth, poor and neo-middle class and "delivers on growth, equity and job creation".

Contending that the Budget is investment-friendly, the PM said it, "Removes all doubts on tax issues" and "assures investors that we have a stable, predictable and fair tax system".

The Prime Minister said the "success" of Jan Dhan Yojana is "gladdening" and "building on that, key schemes are announced that will comprehensively transform lives of the poor"

BJP chief Amit Shah welcomed the provisions on social security and curbing black money. "I welcome the announcement of strict law enforcement on black money. It will help in identifying black money stashed abroad," he said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh took to Facebook to congratulate the FM on a "forward looking and progressive" budget. "This budget highlights the contours of New India," said his post. He said schemes like 'Universal Social Security System' and 'Atal Pension Yojana' will go a long way in strengthening the social security net in India. The budget has ensured transparency and accountability in the system by spelling out a slew of measures to curb the flow of black money, he said.
