A 25-year old woman from the North East was allegedly raped by a junior resident doctor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday night. The doctor was arrested on charges of rape while four others, including a woman, were arrested on charges of trafficking.
According to police, around 6 am on Friday, the police control room received a call from a woman from Hauz Khas in South Delhi. “The woman said she had come to Delhi from Sikkim earlier this week and claimed that she had been raped. A police team reached the spot and took in Dr Meher Tej (27) for questioning. He revealed that he had paid some persons to procure the woman for him,” a police officer said.
“We arrested Dr Meher Tej, a woman named Suman, her husband Sagar and their associates Kamal and Dharamveer. A case of rape and trafficking has been registered in Hauz Khas police station,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Prem Nath told Newsline.
A senior police officer said Suman and her husband Sagar brought the victim to Delhi on February 20 by train. They brought her on the promise of providing her work at a beauty parlour, police said. However, when the woman reached Delhi, she was handed over to Dharamveer who kept her locked in a room in Palam in South Delhi. On Thursday evening, Kamal dropped her off at the doctor’s house and told her to work there as a domestic help for a few days. It was there that the doctor raped her, police said.
Dharamveer fixed a deal with Tej over phone and sent the woman to his house.
“A number of men and women from the North East work in salons across Delhi. That is why the victim fell for the ruse Suman and Sagar set up. On Thursday night, she was sent to the doctor’s house after they struck a deal with him. They planned to sell the woman into flesh trade,” the officer said.
Police, after registering the FIR, sent the woman for a medical examination, which confirmed rape. Police are probing if the arrested persons are part of a group trafficking women from the North East.
Sources at AIIMS said the doctor is a junior resident in the neurosurgery department and has been undergoing a training for the last six months.
