"We in RJD firmly believe that Nitish Kumar will be successful in extending further Lalu Prasad's attempts to strengthen and unite secular forces in the state. Kumar will also ensure all-round development of the state, besides implementing special welfare schemes for the progress of dalits, Mahadalits, backwards and minorities as part of social justice scheme of the grand alliance," RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad said.
Earlier in the day, dozens of RJD functionaries, led by its state president Ram Chandra Purbey, called on Kumar at the latter's residence here to congratulate him on being elected as JD (U) LP leader. Purbey also handed over a bouquet to Kumar on behalf of the RJD.
Purbey said Nitish Kumar being a very experienced politician, would not only thwart the BJP's bid to create political instability in Bihar but also push the state to achieve new heights on the development front.
Similarly, the Congress, having five members in the assembly, said it had decided to continue its support to Nitish Kumar in the hour of political crisis. "Even earlier, our support was to the JD (U), not to any individual. In the present scenario, majority of JD (U) MLAs have elected Nitish Kumar as the JD (U) LP leader and we decided to continue our support to the JD (U)," said Congress legislature party leader Sadanand Singh, who accompanied JD (U) state president Bashistha Narain Singh to the Raj Bhavan to submit the letter of support in favour of Nitish Kumar.
State Congress president Ashok Choudhary, who is in New Delhi for a couple of days, told TOI over phone that the Congress's national leadership has decided to continue its support to JD (U) to thwart any attempt by the BJP to come to power through 'back door'.
A section of senior Congress leaders advised CM Jitan Ram Manjhi not to fall in the trap of BJP. "Manjhi should stop working on the instigation of BJP. He should immediately step down and himself come forward to propose the name of Nitish Kumar as the next CM to end political crisis in the JD (U)," Congress MLC Ramchandra Bharti said.
Former state Congress general secretary Vinod Sharma said Manjhi should not create a situation that ultimately benefited the communal forces. Nitish Kumar had done a lot for the development of Bihar during his previous term as CM.
