Anti-BJP, Manjhi plan: Delhi polls bring Opposition close in Bihar - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The deepening political crisis in Patna amid exit poll projections of a BJP defeat in Delhi assembly polls appear to have presented the hitherto dispirited opposition parties a plank for pooling their resources against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre in the run-up to the budget session of Parliament.

Top leaders of JD (U), RJD, Congress and the Left parties told ET on Sunday that they may not allow Parliament to function if Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi does not accept Nitish Kumar's claim to form a government in the face of revolt by Jitan Ram Manjhi.

Moreover, if the Modi government seeks to latch on to the standoff between Kumar and Manjhi to impose President's rule in the state, the opposition parties plan to use their superior combined strength in Rajya Sabha to deny the mandatory Parliament's nod, the leaders said on condition of anonymity.

The exit poll projections for Delhi assembly elections and the inbuilt larger implications of the political crisis in Bihar show that the achhe din (good days) of opposition are also going to start at the national level from 10th February (when results of Delhi polls will be declared)," a senior opposition leader said, hoping that the Aam Aadmi Party will halt the BJP in Delhi and the developments in Bihar will provide the muchneeded booster shot for the opposition that has been reeling under BJP's serial victories since May last year.

The opposition leaders feel that by bringing the Bihar battle to Delhi they can rally more regional parties such as Trinamool Congress, SP, DMK and INLD, which are similarly feeling the heat from BJP's aggressive plans to expand in other states ahead of assembly elections.

"The JD (U), RJD, Congress, CPI and independent MLAs back Nitish Kumar's claim to form the government. The Bommai judgment makes it clear that only the floor of the House can be used to hold the trial of strength. We, therefore, demand that the Governor convene the Bihar assembly session immediately and conduct a floor test to expose the game of Manjhi and BJP, scripted at Delhi's Ashoka Road (BJP headquarters)," JD (U) general secretary KC Tyagi told ET soon after he returned to Delhi from Patna and held talks with Congress' general secretary in charge of Bihar, CP Joshi.

"After the election it is the ruling party that decides who would be its chief minister. In this case the JD (U) president Sharad Yadav held a meeting of his party MLAs where Manjhi was replaced by Kumar as the new legislative party leader to head the government. There is no confusion on that or the fact that the JD (U), RJD, Congress, CPI and independents together command majority in the Bihar assembly," Joshi said.
