MADURAI: After alleged clash with their Sri Lankan counterparts mid-sea, 43 Indian fishermen and their five boats were apprehended by Lankan navy on Thursday. The boats were rounded up near Mullaitheevu in Lankan waters according to fishermen sources from Sri Lanka. Justin Soysa, President of Mannar District Fishermen Associations in Sri Lanka told TOI over phone that the trawlers started fishing in their waters by Thursday morning and local fishermen from Mullaitheevu protested as their fishing gear got damaged due to trawling which resulted in a fight in sea. "They have attacked one of our fishermen with shovel at Attaikadu area near Mullaitheevu and he sustained cut injuries. We have taken him to our navy and upon seeing him, our navy surrounded the trawlers and apprehended them", Soysa said. He is not sure which part of Tamil Nadu the fishermen belong to. "They are in custody and we will know about their details on Friday morning", he stated.
U Arulanandam of Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen at Pamban in Rameswaram confirmed the incident stating that they could be either from Nagapattinam or Karaikal since fishing activities are suspended in Rameswaram in view of Katchatheevu Islet annual festival this week end. He expressed his concern about the mid-sea clash especially when bilateral talks between fishers are being planned in the month of March. "It has turned into a delicate issue and such mid-sea clash will seriously hamper peace process", he voiced his concern.
