If you happen to have a Nissan GT-R Nismo, more specifically the 2013 Nürburgring special with its Williams suspension, in your garage, fear not: You can still be faster around the Nürburgring than a production Mercedes-AMG GT R. In any other case, you’ll need either a top-level Radical, some sort of hypercar, or the world’s fastest electric prototype to beat the Benz that AMG says was “developed for the ‘Green Hell.’ ” As it turns out, they’ve created a ridiculously capable car.
Germany’s Sport Auto magazine put its test driver Christian Gebhardt behind the wheel, with AMG’s GT R running on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 street tires. Its 577 horses, four-wheel steering, and plenty of development miles spent at the Nürburgring resulted in a lap time of 7:10.92 seconds. That’s wow territory. It’s some 10 seconds faster than a Porsche 911 GT3 RS and only 11 seconds slower than a 740-hp, all-wheel-drive Lamborghini Aventador SV.
