Nissan said the 2017 Sentra NISMO would come in “under $25,000,” which turns out to be true only until you add the mandatory destination fee, at which point this new sport compact comes out to $25,855. That base price applies to both the CVT automatic transmission and the six-speed manual, the latter of which seems the obvious choice for this turbocharged sedan.
Besides those two transmission choices, the only other factory options for the Sentra NISMO are an Aspen White exterior color that’s $295 extra and a $1220 Premium package that adds a Bose audio system and a 5.8-inch touchscreen with navigation and satellite radio. Heated seats, a proximity key, and a backup camera are all standard on the Sentra NISMO, as is a 188-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all manner of exterior and interior trim pieces including microsuede inserts for the steering wheel, a body kit, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 215/45 all-season tires. Summer tires are optional, but Nissan hasn’t yet provided a price for those.
We’re a bit perplexed as to why the NISMO costs $3000 more than the $22,855 Sentra SR Turbo, which has the same 188-hp engine. The NISMO performance treatment, after all, only really amounts to stiffer suspension tuning and the aforementioned trim differences.
Even more worrisome for Nissan is the fact that this Sentra costs a bit more than the more raucous, 252-hp Ford Focus ST ($25,650) and inches up against the 10Best Cars–winning Volkswagen Golf GTI ($26,415). That’s not to mention the Ford Fiesta ST, which has 9 more horsepower and a higher fun factor than the Sentra NISMO and costs thousands less ($21,995). Perhaps Nissan looked only internally when setting the Sentra NISMO’s price—since it’s within $100 of the Juke NISMO’s figure.
