The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-class has only been on sale in the United States since June, yet it’s already been hit with a serious recall.
Early builds of the 2017 E300 and E300 4MATIC sedan have a wiring problem that can lead to engine stalls, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A total of 6858 cars have a wiring harness mounted under the rear-seat bench that can cut off the fuel pump, the fuel-tank pressure sensor, the fuel gauge, or all three. If the pump shuts off, of course, so does the engine. Mercedes says that if passengers press their knees on the seat bench—or do anything that would cause the bench to compress, like sitting there—the movement can damage the wiring underneath.
The company found the problem in July during an internal test and, in examining the wiring harness, concluded it could happen to actual owners. No owners have reported any issues yet, according to filings. Cars built after September 2 have rerouted wiring, and dealers are beginning to apply the same remedy to customer cars. About 3100 of the affected cars are sitting unsold in dealer inventory.
