Let’s be honest: the Toyota Land Cruiser has always been more of a land lumberer than a land cruiser. Thanks to its standard full-time four-wheel-drive system, 8.9 inches of ground clearance, and 27.6 inches of fording depth, the nearly three-ton SUV is actually best at traversing the world’s toughest terrain at a plodding pace.

Toyota, though, is making amends for the Land Cruiser’s misleading name by showing off a Land Cruiser that’s truly capable of cruising.  Toyota unveiled the 220-mph brick, dubbed theLand Speed Cruiser, at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Getting a big box to such high speeds isn’t easy, so Toyota made a number of modifications to help the Land Speed Cruiser cross the two-century mark. Under the hood, a pair of Garrett turbochargers have been fitted to the Land Cruiser’s 5.7-liter V-8 engine, resulting in more more than 2000 horsepower, which is routed through a special racing transmission developed by ATI. Helping in the cause is a more aerodynamic body that’s been lowered and fitted with a chunky front splitter, a big rear diffuser, a slick rear wing, and cameras instead of rearview mirrors.

Granted, the Land Speed Cruiser doesn’t have the off-road chops of its stock counterpart; however, when it comes time to actually cruise, the Land Speed Cruiser does so in spades.
