Volvo is stretching the S90 sedan lineup—literally and figuratively—with two new long-wheelbase versions that will be built in China. The first is simply a stretched version of the standard S90 called the S9o Long Wheel Base, while the second is an ultra-luxury S90 Excellence with a sybaritic rear seat akin to that in the XC90 Excellence SUV. Both sedans feature a 4.7-inch wheelbase stretch compared with the conventional S90 and will be built in Volvo’s plant in Daqing, China.
Meant for customers who are most often driven by a chauffeur, the S90 Long Wheel Base has a more spacious rear seat but is otherwise mechanically similar to the S90 sedan sold in the U.S. Volvo says the stretched version of the car will come to our shores at some point in the near future, but can’t share any details quite yet. It will likely be the second Chinese-built Volvo model exported to the U.S., after the long-wheelbase S60 Inscription. And, given newly announced plans to build the next-generation 60-series and 40-series models in China, it probably won’t be the last.
The S90 Excellence takes the luxury experience one step further with even more focus on a sumptuous rear-seat environment. Two throne-like power-adjustable rear chairs flank a large center console housing heated and cooled cupholders, a built-in refrigerator, and crystal glasses. Even more interesting is the so-called Lounge Console that replaces the front passenger’s seat. Volvo first showed this oddly shaped console as an interior concept last year, and the overall design hasn’t changed much for production. It can serve as a footrest, storage compartment, and entertainment center thanks to a large extendable LCD screen.
Standard equipment for the S90 Excellence is the T8 plug-in hybrid drivetrain that’s also offered on the XC90, combining a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder with electric motors. A full suite of semi-autonomous driving features is also standard, including Volvo’s Pilot Assist system. No decision has been made on whether or not this ultra-luxury Volvo will come to the U.S., although the similarly outfitted XC90 Excellence is already sold on our shores.
