Chrysler’s fourth-generation Uconnect system will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, the company announced at the Consumer Electronics Show—as the initial trickle of automakers offering the technologies is turning into a flood.

Chrysler’s news came right on the heels of a similar announcement from Ford at CES, which is fast-becoming a venue at which automakers feel they must make technology news. Unlike Ford, however, Chrysler is not giving much in the way of specifics as to when or in what cars the updated Uconnect system will appear. The company is saying only that it will be “in select models during 2016.” Nor has the company indicated whether owners of current Chrysler products will be able to upgrade to the new system, as Ford has said some of it owners will be able to do. Besides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the new Uconnect system promises faster processing speeds, sharper resolution, and a more-responsive touch screen.

Looking beyond the latest Uconnect, the company also showed a working mock-up of future in-car connectivity. The concept features car-to-X communications, community tagging (allowing the driver to identify roadway hazards for the benefit of other drivers, à la Waze), follow-me mode (in which a driver can request another car to follow them), and various personalization features that for now are part of the tantalizing future.
