After a nearly 30-year hiatus, bed-mounted “sport bars” are making a roaring comeback on America’s pickup trucks. The style, which resembles a roll bar fitted to a truck’s bed just aft of the cab, reached its zenith on Marty McFly’s all-black Toyota pickup in the 1985 movie Back to the Future, but more recently Chevrolet has added a sport bar to its Colorado “Trail Boss” mid-size truck (even the diesel, no less!) and Toyota modeled a one-off, sport-bar-equipped ’16 Tacoma off the BTF movie truck. Now the sport bar lives at GMC, which added one to the full-size 2016 Sierra All Terrain. The creation is dubbed “All Terrain X,” and is an extra-off-road-styled version of the Sierra’s existing All Terrain model.

The X gear comes as a package on top of the All Terrain, which already brings four-wheel drive, skid plates, off-road Z71 suspension with Rancho shocks, a spray-in bedliner, rear park assist sensors, and an “Inclinometer” to the regular Sierra 1500. The X package adds mud-terrain-rated Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires, black-finished 18-inch wheels, running board steps, LED headlights, black trim and door mirrors, and body-color door handles. Oh, and let’s not forget that sweet sport bar, which comes with attachments for separately purchased accessory spotlights. GMC will offer the X in six colors, including black, white, two different grays, red, and blue. In any hue, that sport bar combined with the chunky tires gives the X plenty of attitude.

While the All Terrain package can be had on less-expensive Sierra double-cab and mid-level SLE models, the X gear requires stepping up to a crew-cab, short-box SLT (and spec’ing the $2480 All Terrain package). Final pricing for the X kit hasn’t been revealed yet, but expect to pay something more than $51,245—the price of a crew-cab Sierra SLT with the All Terrain option—when the truck goes on sale this spring. Also, expect it to look every bit this awesome.
