Four electric motors and more than 1000 horsepower: The slightly juvenile FFZERO1 supercar concept from startup company Faraday Future certainly delivers plenty of wow factor. Indeed, the FFZERO1 is one of the main attractions of this year’s CES in Las Vegas, but it’s just a flashy exercise in “look at me!” The brand is planning to launch more conventional models; a clear hint of the first vehicle, which seems to mix the styling of a crossover and a hatchback sedan, is hidden near the end of a promotional video.
The fastback’s silhouette—which will be about as tall as an Audi Q5—reveals slightly unconventional proportions, and builds on a roofline shown in some of Faraday’s earliest materials. (The glimpse is provided at 1:09 or so in the video below.) The front of the vehicle is extremely short, while we understand that a horizontal signature referred to as the “UFO line” will further characterize the model, as will sweeping, extremely narrow head- and taillights as seen on the low-slung supercar.
Faraday touts the electric platform under the FFZERO1 as flexible enough to easily serve as a foundation for more-pedestrian models such as this one, which is internally called FFZERO2. The skateboard-style architecture is clearly shown here (and in the video), with battery packs highlighted in the floor. The FFZERO2 won’t have that name at launch, nor will it necessarily stick to the four-motor, 1000-horsepower powertrain: “Our platform works with not only four, but also with one, two, or three electric motors,” says exterior chief designer Page Beermann.
The new Faraday vehicle is expected to be unveiled sometime this year; it could come to market in 2017 or 2018. Whenever it goes on sale, it will meet stiff competition that includes the Tesla Model X, Audi Q6, and a fully electric CUV from Mercedes-Benz. As for the supercar shown in Las Vegas, Faraday Future is publicly leaving the door open to a small run of cars, but we understand that it will remain a solitary exercise.
