Audi TT clubsport turbo concept

Each year, the Volkswagen Group goes insane. No, we are not talking about corporate drama at the board level. This is even more fun: The legendary all-things-Volkswagen festival at Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, Austria serves as a launching pad for new technologies and sporty derivatives from VW, SEAT, Audi, and Skoda.

This year, Audi is first to unveil its Wörthersee project. Meet the TT clubsport turbo, a glimpse at the upcoming TT RS—but with R8 levels of power. Inspired, says Audi, by the late-’80s IMSA Audi 90 GTO, it wears extremely wide fenders, a giant rear wing, and a low front spoiler, largely made from carbon-fiber composite materials.

Inside, the TT clubsport turbo is fitted with a titanium roll cage and racing seats with four-point belts. The dash carries over largely unchanged, but the steering wheel, with its buttons for starting the engine, adjusting the driving mode, the stability control system, and setting the pit lane speed, is taken from the new R8.

The TT concept is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five, pushed to an incredible 600 horsepower by means of a single large turbocharger. To counter turbo lag, the five-cylinder is also fitted with an electric supercharger, just like the RS5 TDI prototype that we drove last year. The maximum torque of 479 lb-ft, is delivered to all wheels from 3000 to 7000 rpm. The result: Zero to 62 mph comes up in just 3.6 seconds, top speed is a claimed 193 mph. Ultra-wide, 275/30 R20 tires put the power to the pavement, and the TT concept also includes carbon-ceramic brakes and an adjustable carbon coilover suspension.

We can’t wait to see the other concepts by the VW Group try to steal the show from this truly special TT.
