Delhi Underground: Wary police - The Indian Express

With exit polls predicting a clear victory for the AAP, a senior police officer laid bare his fears about possible “skirmishes” between the AAP and Delhi Police. “Ab yeh Kejriwal aa raha hai. Roz jhagra hoga hamare beech jaise pichhli baar hua tha. Aur yeh drama paanch saal chalega. Ab tamasha dekha jaaye,” the officer said.

Not rivals anymore

Among the BJP leaders accompanying Kiran Bedi on her last roadshow in Krishna Nagar with Union minister Harsh Vardhan was the latter’s rival in the 2013 Assembly elections,V K Monga. Monga had joined the Congress just before the last elections. This time ahead of the elections, he joined the BJP again and flashed the victory sign with his 2013 rival.

Little more fairness

At a polling booth on Saturday, a Delhi Police constable said he had been on duty since 10 pm Friday night. “We are here to ensure that the right of people to vote is safe, secure and uncompromised. But if you ask us what we expect from the new government, it would be a little more fairness and appreciation for police,” he said.

Dr Harsh Vardhan

Addressing a public meeting in Krishna Nagar, senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas mentioned the sore throat of BJP’s CM candidate Kiran Bedi. Calling Union minister Harsh Vardhan, who has won the Assembly elections from Krishna Nagar since 1993, a good friend of his, Vishwas said, “When I have a bad throat, I just call him and ask him to prescribe medication which he always does. But Kiranji doesn’t seem to be communicating enough with him to just call him and ask for a cure for her sore throat.”

Upset with Bedi

Senior BJP leaders may have fallen in line in the wake of party president Amit Shah’s order to abide by the party’s decision on candidates, but many leaders are already complaining about Kiran Bedi. “We have worked for so many years but never come across anyone who is so rude to the cadre,” a senior party member said.

Ayurvedic pills

Days of non-stop election campaigning often leaves politicians with sore throats. Kiran Bedi lost her voice completely for a few days, while Arvind Kejriwal developed a terrible cough. Congress campaign chief Ajay Maken similarly developed a sore throat halfway through campaigning. “I carry Ayurvedic pills with me at all times, so that I can get through the endless talking that comes with the territory,” he joked.

Taking a break

A day after exit polls predicted an AAP victory in the Assembly elections, reporters, hungry for information, waited outside Arvind Kejriwal’s house. As leaders either entered or emerged from the Kaushambi residence where he lives, they were asked what discussions were taking place and were told the leaders were deciding what movie to watch to unwind. This seemed to cause momentary alarm with some media houses. They were told that since most leaders and core volunteers will be going, very few spokespersons will be available during the duration of the film.
