Delhi Elections 2015: Kiran Bedi, campaign tone to be blamed for BJP loss - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: BJP on Sunday held another meeting to reassess its prospects in the Delhi assembly election, but two top state leaders told ET that it has been conveyed to the central leadership that if the party loses, the blame would lie on the Kiran Bedi factor and the personal attacks made by the party on Arvind Kejriwal.

Delhi went to polls on Saturday and almost all the exit polls predicted an emphatic win for Aam Aadmi Party.

On Sunday, while expressing confidence that her party will win, Bedi told ET the election offered a few lessons for the party and those will be analysed after the final results on Tuesday.

ET learns that over the past two days, in different review meetings, BJP state leaders have passed on the "ground feedback" to president Amit Shah that parachuting in Bedi at the last moment as the chief ministerial candidate added to the confusion and only helped "bring out the incompetencies". "We have conveyed that we could have got more votes had we fought on Brand Modi. Kiranji was not prepared for the fight, neither were we for her leadership. The decision just brought out the unpreparedness in the party," said a senior state leader.

"Also, in the last few days, the campaign became very negative. This did not go down well with the people of the city. We should have focussed on our achievements and our plans. This too, we have told the leaders," he said.

On Sunday, all BJP candidates in the fray including Bedi were called to the state BJP office. However, they were asked not to air any complaints, which, sources told ET, "would be heard another day". Shah, who has left for Ahmedabad on a personal trip, didn't attend this meeting. The 90-minute meeting was attended by 160 people, including poll coordinators and booth managers. Every candidate was asked to present his assessment and give an explanation of the situation. The results will be out on Tuesday, but BJP maintained that its own internal poll showed the party winning upwards of 34 seats.

The party's internal poll that came out on Sunday morning said it will win 34 seats comfortably and lose 20. In 16 seats, the party has predicted a close contest. State unit chief Satish Upadhyay said his party was confident of forming a government. "There will be a close fight in some seats but on the whole the ground reports present a good picture. We have analysed every seat and we are confident we are winning," Bedi said.
