India’s pragmatic approach to diplomacy will play a crucial role in the expanding multilateralism in the world, Chinese official media said on Monday as external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj wraps up her packed visit after meetings with her Chinese and Russian counterparts besides a crucial call on President Xi Jinping.
The commentary said Swaraj came to China even as the “excitement” over US President Barack Obama’s visit to India “still lingers” — indicating that India doesn’t want to engage the US alone but also with its “two giant northern neighbours.”
“For India, which aspires to become a leading player on both regional and global arenas, it pays off by adopting a pragmatic approach in diplomacy: instead of purely looking to the West to heed every move in Washington, it also attaches great importance to relations with its two giant northern neighbours,” Xinhua , the official news agency, said in a commentary on Monday.
Swaraj’s visit, a preparatory one in the lead-up to Narendra Modi’s visit in May, sent the signal that India’s diplomacy wasn’t one directional. It helped that her visit included the trilateral Russia, India and China meeting.
“The trilateral regular meeting mechanism for foreign ministers of India, China and Russia is a perfect example showcasing India’s intention to seek a balance when it comes to dealings with major players,” the media said.
