Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sent out a loud and clear message to 400-odd MPs of the National Democratic Alliance to "think big, far and above politics" and represent a "force with tremendous positive energy" that could help chart a new course for the country.

Addressing lawmakers of the ruling alliance at a Diwali Milan programme at his Race Course Road residence, the Prime Minister asked MPs to connect with people as they undertake efforts for the 'Swachh Bharat'. "Achieving Swachh Bharat (Clean India) is tough, but just as people of this country got together to eradicate polio, in the same spirit, Swachh Bharat can also be achieved," the PM told NDA MPs.
He urged them to visit schools in their areas over a five-day period beginning November 14th – the 125th birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and explain to children the importance of hygiene. “This would send a positive message,” he said. Incidentally, the government had recently constituted a committee, comprising leaders from the BJP and the Congress, to commemorate 125 birth anniversary of the first prime minister, a move that many in the Congress see as an attempt by the ruling coalition to usurp the legacy of a Congress veteran.
As he tried to take MPs on board about some recent initiatives by the government - some of which caused unease in the NDA fraternity - the event was also seen as an exercise by the prime minister to dispel any impression about a gap between the government and the alliance.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made a detailed presentation on the state of the economy and gave a detailed account of the reasons behind government's gas pricing and diesel deregulation decision.
An MP said Jaitley underscored while government was committed to pushing growth, which got reflected in the decision to let market determine diesel prices, it was mindful of the plight of the aam aadmi and took the end user price into consideration while determining the gas pricing.
Jaitley also briefed MPs about the Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana, and called it a big success. Rural development minister Nitin Gadkari briefed MPs about the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana and asked MPs to take the scheme with all seriousness to bring about a change on the ground.
Labour Minister Narendra Singh Tomar made a presentation about the reforms undertaken by the government. The Prime Minister urged the MPs to educate the masses that these initiatives were not aimed at curbing the interest of the workers and rather an exercise to ensure that their rights were protected.
Modi also urged MPs to take to the people, the work done by the NDA Government for the welfare of the poor. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu gave some tips to the MPs for the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The prime minister also felicitated BJP chief Amit Shah for party’s victory in Haryana and Maharashtra assembly election.
