New Delhi: Former BJP member and Supreme Court advocate Ram Jethmalani has written a letter to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley accusing him of not taking effective steps to bring back black money.
Jethmalani in his letter to the Finance Minister slammed his argument that the names of black money account holders cannot be revealed beacuse it breaches double taxation avoidance agreement with other countries. The former BJP leader claimed that German authorities have agreed to share names with the Indian government without any cost or condition.
The senior lawyer said that he suspects Jaitley did not want the truth to come out, exposing PM Modi to allegations of misguiding the nation. He added that Jaitley had ambtions of becoming PM and it seemed he was trying to take revennge against Modi for taking office.
"You are taking the nation to suicide and exposing Modiji to the charge of misguiding the nation. This might be your method of taking revenge for his snatching office which you thought belonged to you," Jethmalani wrote.
Earlier last week, the Centre had told the Supreme Court that it cannot disclose the names of people having black money stashed abroad. The government said that the names could not be made public as it violated the double taxation avoidance agreement.
The government, however, said that the names will be shared with the concerned agencies.
The apex court will hear the government's plea on October 28.
