New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior ministers on Sunday asked members of Parliament (MPs) belonging to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties to be ready to not only defend the government in the coming winter session of Parliament but also seek political support among the people.

A day before a crucial meeting of the cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs, Modi on Sunday invited NDA MPs for a Diwali milan at his residence where he briefed them about the steps taken by the government in the last five months. This is the first meeting of NDA members since the BJP came to power in the Lok Sabha elections.

In the course of the meeting, finance minister Arun Jaitley gave a detailed presentation on the Jan Dhan Yojana and the recent decisions taken by the government on gas prices.

There was another presentation by Union minister for transport Nitin Gadkari who briefed the over 390 NDA MPs belonging to both Houses of Parliament about the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana programme unveiled by Modi. The PM is keen that MPs not only implement these projects in their constituencies but also tell constituents about the other programmes of the government.

“The third presentation was by labour minister Narendra Singh Tomar who informed the MPs about the recent labour reforms of the government. Modi wants MPs to defend the government’s decision in Parliament,” said a BJP MP present at the meeting who declined to be named.

Interestingly, all the 21 MPs of the Shiv Sena, led by Union minister Anant Geete , were present at the meeting, and senior leaders of the party said there was a discussion on a possible alliance between the two parties in Maharashtra for government formation. Although the BJP and the Sena are part of the NDA, the two parties ended their 25-year-old alliance in Maharashtra and contested the state assembly elections on their own. The former became the single largest party in the state after the assembly elections.

“This is not the forum to discuss alliances. PM had invited MPs for a brief about the work done by the government and also to wish them for Diwali. The two observers appointed by the BJP, Rajnath Singh and J.P. Nadda will go to Mumbai for a meeting of the legislative party,” said a senior BJP leader, who was present at the nearly two-hour-long meeting.

Senior leaders of the BJP also said that the MPs felicitated BJP president Amit Shah for the party’s performance in Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha polls and the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

“Narendra Modi wants the MPs to ensure that the financially weaker section of people must be informed that the government was working for them. The Prime Minister has also asked the MPs to take steps so that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (clean India campaign) is implemented in their constituencies and people join the cleanliness movement,” the BJP leader said.
