As outrage spread over the horrific gang rape of two Dalit teenaged cousins, whose bodies were found hanging from a tree in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, authorities on Friday sacked two constables in connection with the crime even as police arrested another accused in the case.

The crime led to tension in the village and police were deployed to maintain calm. While former UP chief minister Mayawati attacked the state government for ‘poor law and order’ condition, TV reports said home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to local officials for information about the incident.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said a probe was on into the incident.

In another incident in Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’ constituency, Azamgarh, a teenage Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by four persons. The incident took place on Thursday night when four men allegedly caught the 17-year-old girl and gang raped her in a nearby field, police said.

Police said all four accused fled the spot after the crime. An FIR has been lodged in this connection and the hunt is on to nab the four accused, they said.

In Badaun, SP Atul Kumar Saxena said the services of two constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav have been terminated in connection with the rape of the two cousins. "One more accused Awadhesh Yadav has been arrested by the police," he said.

Of the seven wanted in the case, three (policeman Sarvesh Yadav and brothers Pappu and Awadhesh Yadav) have been arrested so far, he said. Sarvesh and Pappu were arrested on Thursday.

Four others Urvesh Yadav (brother of Pappu and Awadhesh), policeman Chhatrapal Yadav and two unidentified persons are at large.

The two girls, who were cousins and aged 14 and 15 years, went missing from their house on Tuesday night and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in the village on Wednesday morning.

DIG, Bareilly range, RKS Rathore told HT on phone that the panel of three doctors, including a woman, have confirmed sexual assault on the teenagers. He said the panel also found some ante mortem injuries on the bodies with cause of death being due to hanging.

Of the seven accused, Sarvesh and Chhatrpal were booked under section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC, while the three brothers and two others have been booked under section 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of IPC.

Following another incident of rape in UP, the mother of the victim was allegedly beaten by the father of the accused after her family refused to withdraw allegations against his son, police said on Friday.

The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was critically ill in hospital after suffering multiple fractures in the attack at the family's home in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, police and medics said.

The father of the accused has been arrested and police said they were still looking for several other suspects accused of taking part in the attack on the victim's mother on May 26.

"The father of the rapist was arrested by our team this morning. Other accused shall be arrested shortly," local police chief RK Chaturvedi told AFP.

According to the NDTV network, the mother was attacked in a field near the family home by five men who had already tried to pressure her into dropping the complaint.

The cases have once again highlighted the country’s dismal record on preventing sexual violence, despite tougher laws after the fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in December 2012.
