Police authorities claimed on Thursday they were pursuing all leads in the investigation and several teams have been dispatched to possible hideouts of the three accused and search operations were continuing.
"The sleuths have quizzed the villagers who were present at the attack site when the woman was assaulted late on Sunday evening. We are hoping an early breakthrough," said DIG (Range) R K Chaturvedi who is personally monitoring the case.
The DIG claimed that the rape accused Sunny had already been arrested though the police had till Wednesday maintained that he was at large. But the DIG did not give any specific detail of the arrest.
The DIG further said that the police had detained a few close relatives of the accused with whom they were in constant touch on phone after the attack. "Based on the information police teams have been fanned out to their suspected hideouts in neighbouring villages as well as in bordering districts," he added.
The brother of the victim, while talking to TOI from the hospital on Thursday, demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice without any leniency. "We want justice. Our life has been ruined and the police has done nothing," he said.
Doctors treating the mother of the rape survivor said she was recuperating. "She is out of danger, but is still in intensive care unit amidst police security," said a senior administrative officer at the Etawah district hospital. "The woman is in a deep state of psychological shock," they added.
The woman's teenage daughter was raped on the night of May 11 in her house in a village near Civil Lines area of Etawah. Subsequently, she filed an FIR with the Civil Lines police station accusing her neighbour Sunny, son of Basant Lal Yadav, on May 12.
The family members of the rape accused had been pressurising her mother into withdrawing the police complaint. Late on Sunday evening, they attacked the woman with sharp-edged weapons and 'lathis' and stripped her in full public view in a bid to force her into a compromise with the accused. Sunny's father Basant, his brother and cousin have been named in the FIR filed in the assault case.
