2019 Genesis G70

Surprise! The upcoming Genesis G70 sports sedan, the one bent on taking the nascent luxury brand’s fight to BMW, will offer a stick-shift option. At least, it will in Canada, per Genesis’ own preorder website for the G70, which we’re taking as a good indication that it will also be available in the United States.

The Genesis Canada-market website currently displays preorder information for the G70 that includes trim level details and the tidbit about the manual transmission. The stick is only available on the 2.0T Sport trim with rear-wheel drive; translated from Genesis-speak, 2.0T means turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The Sport’s goodies list is long and includes a limited-slip rear differential, Brembo brakes, a head-up display, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, and 16-way power front seats. All-wheel-drive G7os and those with the available twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 (3.3T, in case you needed help) all use an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The lack of the same information on the U.S. website is probably because the upcoming 2018 New York auto show is supposed to be the U.S.-market G70’s big reveal. (So far, the car has only been shown officially in Korea-market guise.) We reached out to Genesis for clarity, but its spokesperson had no comment, although we did report in September 2017 that the U.S. Genesis team had requested the 2.0T/manual combo, perhaps only for the first model year. So consider the Canada  news a soft confirmation that the G70 may do its small part to Save the Manuals when it goes on sale here in the United States.
