When it comes to the 911 GT3 RS‘s first ever Weissach package option—the high-performance treatment has previously been available on other Porsches—not only will the already lightened sports car be made lighter, so, too, will your wallet. The option will cost $18,000 atop the 520-hp GT3 RS’s $188,550 base price. If you’d like the lightest-weight combination of features, add another $13,000 for the ultra-cool magnesium wheels available only on Weissach package cars.

Porsche-obsessed car nuts with an ax to grind against extraneous weight will surely revel in the combined add-ons paring the 911 GT3 RS’s curb weight by 38 pounds. (With both options, the new GT3 RS weighs just 3153 pounds, according to Porsche.) Oh, and the price of each mass redactor is lopsided: The magnesium rims save 25 pounds, while the Weissach kit’s bevy of carbon-fiber bits chop about 13 pounds yet cost $5K more.

Not only does this not need to make sense (if you don’t get it, hey, just don’t spend $220,000 on one), but those prices are reasonably sane as far as Porsche options go. It is remarkably easy to add more than $30,000 to the sticker price of even a lowly 718 Boxster roadster or a base-model Macan crossover. And unlike leather-lined air vents or color-matched key fobs, the Weissach package’s changes should improve upon the GT3 RS’s already grand performance promise.

For example, where the regular GT3 RS wears a fancy, lightweight magnesium roof panel, the Weissach version replaces that with an even-fancier, lighter-weight carbon-fiber panel that saves 1.1 pounds. Critically, that weight is taken out of the tallest part of the car, which should lower the center of gravity, however fractionally. The carbon roof also is left unpainted, as are the carbon-fiber hood and rear wing (which are of the same material but painted on the non-Weissach RS).

Porsche’s chase for pounds even drove it to replace the anti-roll bars and their connective hardware with carbon-fiber pieces (saving 11.9 pounds) and to swap the shift paddles and some steering-wheel trim for carbon fiber (saving 0.5 pound). Curious how you might identify a Weissach GT3 RS from, say, the 700-hp, twin-turbocharged 911 GT2 RS? Easy. Just keep an eye out for those exposed carbon-fiber pieces, the gigantic “PORSCHE” lettering on the wing, and Weissach badging on the headrests and on the dashboard above the glovebox. Oh, and listen for the 9000-rpm, naturally aspirated flat-six.
