Infiniti Q Inspiration concept

Following the unveiling of  its provocative Q Inspiration concept, Infiniti has released a statement loosely detailing its plans to incorporate electric propulsion into its lineup in the near future. Starting in 2021, nearly all newly launched models will include either a hybrid or an EV variant, with Infiniti’s first electric vehicle launching the same year.

Infiniti did not go into detail on its electrification plans, but it did confirm that a majority of new models launched from 2021 on will rely either on battery-electric propulsion or what the company calls e-Power. The latter is a setup in which the vehicle is “electrically propelled” but has an onboard gasoline engine that kicks in when the batteries run out of juice and need a charge.

We say large majority, not all, because Infiniti called out a body-on-frame full-size “luxury SUV” as one of the possible exceptions to this electrification plan. When asked about the possibility that a hybrid would use the company’s new variable-compression turbo (VC-T) technology, which is making its debut in the 2019 QX50, Infiniti neither confirmed nor denied such an idea. A representative told Car and Driver that VC-T will serve as a “bridge between internal-combustion engines we have today and our electric future.”

There is no word as to what form the electric vehicle debuting in 2021 will take, but with the Q Inspiration as a possible flagship, Infiniti said future vehicles will wear similar design motifs.
