Tesla is voluntarily recalling some 53,000 vehicles globally over an issue with the electronic parking brakes on its Model S and Model X vehicles built between February and October 2016. The electric parking brakes in the cars and crossovers may contain a small gear that could break when the parking brakes are engaged. If that happens, the vehicle would be stuck in park. There have not been any rollaways due to the issue, the company said.
Tesla said only a small percentage—less than 5 percent—of gears built during the period may have been manufactured improperly. The part was sourced from automotive supplier Brembo, Tesla said. No injuries or accidents related to the issue have been reported, and the affected vehicles are safe to continue driving, according to the company.
A majority of the affected cars and crossovers are in the United States, Tesla said. The automaker is mailing an official recall notice to owners, telling them how to get the parking brakes replaced. The company said it will begin replacing the parts immediately, and expects to have sufficient parts for all affected vehicles by October 2017. The repair should take about 45 minutes.
