By this point, years into a lengthy parade of spy photos, speculative assessments, and excited anticipation for Chevrolet’s mighty Corvette ZR1 and, separately, the mid-engined C8, you might be feeling a bit shellshocked. Brace yourself, because we’re adding another float to the procession with new and detailed photos of the ZR1 testing at the Nürburgring in Germany.
To recap, the ZR1 will be the most powerful, most capable Corvette in the stable when it arrives later this year with more than 700 horsepower. It also will be the last hurrah for the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive C7 Corvette—before the mid-engined C8 bows sometime in the not-too-distant future. So you’d expect it to offer mind-bending performance, and the crazy aerodynamic bits we know it’ll have, along with the superwide tires seen here and the angry noises other prototypes have been caught making indicating we’re in for something special.
These photos show by far the least covered-up ZR1 prototype we’ve seen yet, affording us a closer peek at previously hidden details. The front fenders, for example, are more vent than fender, presumably to suck hot air out of the engine bay or evacuate air from the front wheel wells. Maybe both—either that, or it’s because slots look cool. For the first time we can clearly make out the front bumper’s trio of gigantic intakes, the rippled louvers on the hood bulge, and the wavy rear wing. Those slightly torqued, split-five-spoke wheels are similarly imposing. Now the only things left for us to find out are the power figures and what this beast looks like without swirly camouflage and tape all over it.
