Porsche has an exciting new drivetrain on its hands: the 680-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 hybrid setup from the impressive new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. So it would be remiss to limit that gasoline-electric goodness to only one model, right? Right. Speaking to the Australian publication Motoring at the Geneva auto show, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the Cayenne SUV will soon receive a Turbo S E-Hybrid variant of its own.
It’s not surprising that Porsche is looking to expand the Cayenne range even further into the stratosphere, past the existing 570-hp Cayenne Turbo S (pictured). We can assume that the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid will share its 550-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and electric motor with the Panamera, along with its standard all-wheel drive and eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission.
This new model will help Porsche claim bragging rights in the über-SUV segment currently inhabited by the Tesla Model X and the Bentley Bentayga. If Porsche plays its cards right, it may be able to call this super-Cayenne the quickest and fastest SUV; it’ll have to beat the Tesla’s 3.3-second sprint to 60 mph and the Bentley’s claimed 187-mph top speed to do so. The battle should heat up soon, as Porsche is reportedly planning to show this ultimate Cayenne hybrid sometime in 2018.
