As part of a roundup of drug and arms traffickers, Italian police made a pretty incredible discovery: There was a plot to steal Enzo Ferrari’s body and hold it for ransom.
Really.
As Reuters reports, police said they had reasons to suspect that a gang was planning to steal the body and then they suspect the gang would either force Ferrari’s family or the company to pay a hefty ransom for his return. No other details were made available during the police news conference, held on the island of Sardinia.
Ferrari died in 1988 at the age of 90 and is buried in an above-ground tomb in Modena, Italy, not far from the headquarters of his eponymous company. How the heist would have taken place without anyone getting caught isn’t readily apparent, and if it had taken place, it’d surely be one of the most outlandish crimes in Italian history.
