Dodge is continuing to stretch the Challenger SRT Demon’s 15 minutes of pre-reveal fame with its latest teaser, No Pills. Information as to what pills the Demon isn’t taking is beyond us (Viagra?), but the new teaser reveals one of the drag-racing pony car’s key performance features: its two-step ignition system. It’s also our first chance to hear the Demon’s Hemi V-8 at full wail.
That specialized ignition system creates a unique exhaust note. Two-step ignitions are a serious drag-racing tool, incorporated into the launch protocol. They work by selectively cutting fuel to half of the engine’s cylinders without deactivating the valves above the unfueled cylinders. This is done to keep the supercharger spinning as fast as possible, ensuring the Demon’s Hemi V-8 is able to produce maximum boost from the get-go without unleashing all of its tire-shredding torque at low rpm. In the case of the Demon, Dodge states that the feature is only available in Launch mode, and that it won’t kick in until the engine is spinning at 1000 rpm or better.
The video not only affords us the opportunity to listen to the demonic Hemi, but we also get to see the car from behind as it powers down a drag strip. The rear license plate reads “3.9+221=405,” which suggests that the Dodge Boys need some tutoring in math, unless there’s some other meaning, which readers are invited to posit.
And finally, if playing this video doesn’t sufficiently annoy your co-workers, you can download that exhaust note as a ringtone. Watch for more on the Demon in the run-up to the car’s full unveiling (finally) on April 11.
