Porsche 914-8 GTS

The wonderful thing about the Porsche 914 is that until recently, examples have been relatively inexpensive and quite plentiful, making the mid-engined runabout a fine platform on which to build the owner’s dream car. The downside is that, well, some owners have questionable dreams. This 914-8 GTS offers up a mishmash of cues from a variety of automobiles, and what’s more, it can be yours in just over a week’s time!

Up for bid at Auctions America’s Hilton Head auction, the 1973 model features a Chevy small-block (of course!) making a reported 375 horsepower. Take that, PiĆ«ch! Its nose celebrates the pre-Ferrari-spinoff FCA, with a Maranello-esque egg-crate grille and headlights that appear to be from a Chrysler 300M. Out back, it wears fifth-generation Corvette taillights (naturally!), while the sides have been heavily resculpted and now feature vestigial Ferrari Testarossa strakes directing air toward the engine compartment.

The Porsche 914’s iconic targa bar has been replaced with a roll hoop, and the front suspension bits have been swapped for stouter 911 parts. In short, there seems to be hardly a single piece on this thing that hasn’t been touched. Even the dash and interior door panels have been changed out for BMW bits.

In an age where the word “bespoke” has been overused to the point of abject meaninglessness, this car has “bespoke” written all over it. Actually, if you took a Sharpie and scribbled “bespoke” all over the car, it might conceivably improve things a bit. Auctions America suggests that the 914-8 GTS will go for between $30,000 and $35,000. A box of 24 Sharpies is currently $10.75 on Amazon. We’re sure you know what to do.
