Toyota is recalling 1,584,000 more cars in the U.S. as part of the expanded Takata airbag recall, the company said Monday.
The new total increases the affected Toyota, Scion, and Lexus models from 3,113,000 to 4,697,000. Several new models that were not previously recalled are now included, all for the passenger-side front airbag: The 2006–2011 Yaris and Lexus IS; 2007–2011 Lexus ES; 2008–2011 Scion xB; 2009–2011 Corolla and Matrix; 2010–2011 4Runner and Lexus GX; and the 2011 Sienna. (The complete updated list of Toyota models can be found here.)
Dealers will replace the airbag inflator at a later date—possibly not for many more months—depending on the state in which the car resides and parts availability. So far, Mercedes-Benz is the only other automaker to specify models in the recall expansion. By our count, 26.4 million cars from 25 brands have been recalled for potentially defective Takata airbags.
