This weekend, a Chevrolet Camaro will be pacing the 2016 Indy 500, a not terribly surprising circumstance, given that the past dozen years have seen either a Camaro or a Corvette in that role. And, of course, both models have often spun off Indy Pace Car replicas, making them a not-uncommon sight at collector-car sales venues. But on eBay this week we find a considerably more obscure example of the Indy Pace Car breed: a 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible.

In the event’s 100-race history, a Plymouth has been the pace car only one time. The ’65 Fury convertible, powered by a 383-cubic-inch V-8, was driven by Chrysler-Plymouth division general manager P.M. Buckminster. While the actual pace car went home with race winner Jim Clark, some 1500 Fury convertible Indy Pace Car replicas were available for Mopar-minded race fans, at Buckminster’s friendly Chrysler-Plymouth dealers.

With a groovy white exterior, blue top, and two-tone blue interior, this Fury matches the color scheme of the actual pace car, and similarly packs a 383-cube V-8 with a four-barrel carburetor under its wide expanse of hood. The engine is backed by a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic, stirred via console-mounted shifter.

Claimed to be freshly restored, the car’s only evident deviations from the original specifications are the styled-steel wheels where the actual pace car had full wheelcovers, and the placement of the rear-fender graphics above rather than below the chrome bodyside molding. This sharp-looking Fury carries an asking price of $24,995. Given the dearth of other Indy Pace Car Plymouths out there, market value is a little hard to hard to gauge. But it strikes us as a serious hunk of Indy pace car for the cash.
