Nissan is recalling 108,503 Rogue crossovers for tailgate struts that may fail, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The 2014–2016 Rogue has hydraulic tailgate struts with insufficient anti-corrosion coatings that can cause the outer tube to rust through the middle, causing all the gas to escape and the strut to break off. While Nissan isn’t aware of any such failures in the U.S., in January it found broken struts on an older, unspecified model sold elsewhere and decided to recall the Rogue out of caution, the company said. The Rogue Select, the older version sold alongside the current-gen Rogue between 2014 and 2015, is not affected.
Dealers will replace both tailgate struts later this year. Owners will receive an interim recall notice in June and a final notice when parts are available. Last year, the Rogue was recalled twice for fuel pump failures that caused engine stalls and for possible electrical fires from wiring harnesses that weren’t properly waterproofed.
