Unfazed by criticism of the current model’s design, BMW is working on a replacement for the 5-series Gran Turismo, industry sources have told Car and Driver. The current model, which made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show, will get a successor some time after the launch of the next-generation 5-series sedan.

The current 5-series GT, arguably challenged in the looks department, was designed to be particularly roomy and versatile. The hatchback does not enjoy great success in the U.S. market, which prefers sedans, and in fact we’ve been told that BMW’s U.S. executives would have preferred to keep it out of the market here. But it does quite well in China: The People’s Republic is the vehicle’s most important market.

Here’s the good news: The next 5-series GT has been described to us as far sleeker-looking car than the current model. Nevertheless, it will keep its spacious and airy cabin. Next time around, maybe we’ll actually welcome it.
