Barely trailing its General Motors platform-mate, the Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Sierra also receives a mid-cycle refresh for 2016. Compared to the 2016 Silverado, which was more or less given an all-new face, the GMC’s changes are more subtle, although because GMC is so far only releasing photos, we don’t know the full extent of the Sierra’s updates.
We do know that GMC went a little LED-crazy on the truck’s exterior, tossing in C-shaped LED flourishes in both the headlights and taillights, as well as LED fog lights. The front fascia was reshaped and now looks chunkier, while at least one of the truck’s available wheel designs (the one visible in these photos) appears to be cribbed from the Yukon SUV’s option sheet. (The wheels pictured here look identical to the 21-inchers on our long-term 2015 Yukon XL Denali test car.) Additionally, the photos released by GMC show Apple CarPlay phone-mirroring integration for the Sierra’s available IntelliLink infotainment system; this isn’t surprising, as GMC itself told us the feature would be a part of the 2016 Sierra’s repertoire.
For now, GMC is tight-lipped on the topics of the 2016 Sierra’s powertrains and chassis. For the 2016 Silverado, Chevrolet expanded the optional eight-speed automatic’s availability to more engines, in addition to offering new safety features. Look for more details to surface closer to the 2016 GMC Sierra’s on-sale date in the fourth quarter of this year.
