There’s are a lot of great homologated race cars out there, but this 1964 Porsche 904 Carerra GTS may just be the coolest of them all.
In the early 60s, Porsche began work on a new car aimed at competing in FIA GT racing. In 1963 the 904 made its debut and raced the following year; around 106 road-going models also were built in ’64 and ’65. Most examples were powered by a 2.0-liter flat-four engine making somewhere around 170 horsepower. They also featured Porsche’s first composite body on a road-going car, which allowed a very low curb weight of approximately 1500 pounds. The 904 could achieve an impressive-for-the-time top speed of nearly 160 mph.
This 904 is shown as production model 006 and has a unique history as a Porsche works car. According to the seller, it competed in the Targa Florio, the Monte Carlo Rally, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Tour de France Automobile, and the Nurburgring 1000, and has since received a full restoration. Due to the car’s rarity, unique history, and seemingly immaculate condition, we’re not surprised that Gooding & Company expects bidding to to reach into the $2 million range next month at its Pebble Beach auction.
