India wants Dawood back from Pak after tapes confirm his presence in Karachi - India Today

Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. India on Saturday asked Pakistan to hand over Dawood Ibrahim, saying enough evidence had been given to it against the underworld don. The remarks came after Mail Today got access to fresh tapes claiming Dawood's presence in Karachi.

"Wait and watch" was Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's response when asked about the new piece of evidence on the 1993 Mumbai serial blast mastermind.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said India has a very clear stand on the issue for a long time and has been saying that Dawood is living in Karachi.

"Pakistan should act and hand him over to us," said the minister reacting to the fresh tapes that have emerged, highlighting Dawood's flourishing business in Dubai and Pakistan

The government said it has sought fresh tapes that were accessed from western diplomatic sources by MAIL TODAY. New Delhi also said that the issue of handing over of Dawood was also raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

Rijiju said that Pakistan should cooperate with India in its fight against terrorism and act on the evidence. The fresh tapes nails Pakistan's lie that Dawood was not present in the country. The reports suggested that the underworld don operates from Clifton in Karachi under the shadow of the Pakistani intelligence agencies.

New Delhi hopes that after the Peshawar attacks, in which 132 school children were killed, Pakistani establishment will end distinction between 'good and bad terrorists'. It wants Islamabad to walk the talk on terrorism and hand over Dawood Ibrahim to India and punish the masterminds of the Mumbai attacks of 26/11. Pakistan's track record has been abysmal when it comes to taking action against terrorists involved in attacks against India.

Any change of heart in Islamabad will be confirmed through its actions, said a senior MHA official. There cannot be any double speak any more, the official added. The Nawaz Sharif government has announced a slew of measures to counter terrorism after the Peshawar attacks but there are no signs if India's concerns would be addressed.

Islamabad has remained in denial mode for years now. But the latest evidence shows that Dawood Ibrahim's syndicate has flourished despite him being declared an international terrorist.

All this is not possible without active support from Pakistani intelligence agencies which give him protection. The Indian agencies have not ruled out operation to target Dawood Ibrahim and bring him to justice. Dawood's henchmen have been active in India and openly indulge in extortion business in Mumbai.
