India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his Test retirement with immediate effect on Tuesday.
Dhoni decided to call time on his Test career in the wake of India's series defeat against Australia.
Following are the reactions:
Sachin Tendulkar:
"well done on a wonderful career in test cricket @msdhoni. Always enjoyed playing together. Next target 2015 WC my friend!!"
BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel
"MS is a very practical man. Today, he called up just after the Test match in Melbourne and told me that he wanted to retire from Test cricket. I asked him "what happened are you injured or what?" He just calmly told me "No, I just want to quit Test cricket for good,". He is an Indian captain and a distinguished cricketer. It's his personal choice and I needed to respect that".
Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar
"To me it was a real surprise. I thought he will play for one or two more years in Test cricket as he's a very fit person".
Former Test cricketer Chandu Borde
"It came as a surprise, didn't it, that he quit midstream. It (decision to quit) could have been taken earlier. But perhaps he thought it was the right time to hand over the mantle to the next man".
Ajit Wadekar
"The decision was extraordinary. I feel he should have waited till the end of the series (after January 6-10, 2015 fourth Test at Sydney). He has already missed the first Test (at Adelaide because of a prior injury)."
Former England captain Michael Vaughan
"Love the way @msdhoni plays the game ... But it's now the right time for @imVkohli to take the Indian Test team in a new direction."
Former India captain Anil Kumble
"Chennai 2 G, Great career MSD @msdhoni retired as captain. Way 2 go! Well done buddy on a fantastic test inning! Good luck!"
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar
"He was a top class leader...the biggest thing about Mahendra Singh Dhoni is he's been a supremely content person with whatever has come his way in life. No better state to be in than being supremely content."
Former England captain Nasser Hussain
"His 45 per cent win-rate, the highest of any Indian captain to skipper the side at least five times, is phenomenal but just as impressive is the way he has led the side with such dignity and calmness during his 60 Tests in charge."
India cricketer Suresh Raina
"Valiant while you led. Valiant in your departure. #Respect"
Ad-guru Prasoon Joshi
"Dhoni has reached a stage where retirement from Tests should not affect his brand value. A brand goes through ups and downs, a brand also has a life cycle. He would now be known for diffferent attributes after today's retirement. His image will go through a change of course but would it be downhill for him? I don't think so".
Harbhajan, Yuvraj refuse to comment
"I will not say anything as I have nothing to say," said Harbhajan.
Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha
"Congratulations Dhoni Bhai on a wonderful Test career".
Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi
"MSDhoni's retirement in midst of test series leaves lot of us perplexed! But that's his prerogative.I'd like 2 wish MSD Happy Retirement".
Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar
"Just feeling a bit sad about Dhoni's retirement from Test Cricket. Didn't see it coming at all".
Former Pakistan player Saqlain Mushtaq
"Well done MS Dhoni on a wonderful career in Test cricket."
