Forgive Niranjan Jyoti, be generous: PM Narendra Modi tells Lok Sabha - Hindustan Times

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conceded to Opposition demands and made a statement in Lok Sabha on Friday disapproving minister Niranjan Jyoti's hate speech but failed to break the deadlock in Parliament.

A united Opposition disrupted proceedings for the fourth day in a row in both houses of Parliament demanding that minister Jyoti be fired over her abusive comments, forcing an adjournment till afternoon.

Modi in his statement in the lower house requested members to accept Jyoti's apology and let parliament function in the best in the best interests of the nation.

"The minister has apologised, she is new and we are also aware of her social background. She comes from a village," Modi said.

He said that when a "friend" apologises in front of such a big house, "we should also generously accept" the apology.

"I had expressed annoyance over Sadhvi's remarks even before the issue was raised in Parliament," Modi said.

But his statement failed to pacify opposition parties who said a mere apology is not enough in such a serious case.

Modi had made a similar statement in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday strongly criticising his minister for her controversial remarks made at a campaign rally in Delhi.

Jyoti, minister of state for food processing industries, had apologised in Parliament on Tuesday, reportedly on the orders of the Prime Minister, but opposition parties like the Left want her sacked and say she must face criminal charges for trying to incite communal hatred.

"The people of Delhi have to decide if they want a government of Ramzaadon (descendants of Ram) or haramzaadon (those who are illegitimately born)," Jyoti had reportedly had said at a public meeting in Delhi on Monday.
