A 27-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by the driver of a cab that she reportedly got through Uber, an international cab-booking service, late on Friday night, said the police. A rape case has been registered against the driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, who is absconding.
The incident was reported at around 1:25 am on Saturday. The vehicle, a Swift Dzire, was recovered from Mathura, in Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday.
Confirming the incident, DCP, North, Madhur Verma, said: “We have registered a case of rape and have identified the driver. He will be arrested soon. The driver of the cab, booked through Uber, had not been subjected to a police verification. The company, which did not get his background check done, will be held liable for gross negligence, and asked to join the investigation.” He added that the cab did not have the mandatory GPS also.
According to reports, the woman, who works with a finance company in Gurgaon, was returning to her home in Inderlok, North Delhi, when the incident occurred. “The woman had gone to a restaurant for dinner with some friends after her shift ended at 7 pm. One of her friends gave her a ride till Vasant Vihar, from where she took the cab to Inderlok,” said the police, citing the complaint filed by the victim.
On the way, the woman reportedly dozed off in the cab. “The victim slept off in the car as it was moving at a slow pace. The driver allegedly saw her sleeping and took the car to a secluded spot. When she woke up and tried to question him, he told her that he was taking another route to avoid the traffic,” said the police.
“The driver then allegedly stopped the car in a dark area and attempted to rape her. The woman raised an alarm but since it was a
secluded spot, nobody came to her rescue. The driver reportedly sexually assaulted her and beat her up. The woman said she tried to fight back, but he overpowered her. He reportedly told her that if she shouted for help, he would insert a rod in her genitals, and reminded her of the December 16 2012 bus gangrape in the city,” said the police.
In her complaint, the woman said the driver repeatedly slapped her and punched her when she tried to use her phone to make a call. He then reportedly warned her not to report the matter to the police.
“The driver reportedly told the woman that he would drop her home safely only if she assured him that she would not report the matter. He warned her that he knew her address and would get her killed if she dared to complain about him to Uber,” said continued…
