A Mumbai sessions court on Monday found Sajjad Mogul, the security guard of the building where 25-year-old lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha resided, guilty of murdering her. The quantum of punishment will be decided on Thursday, July 3.

Mogul was convicted on charges of murder, molestation and trespassing.

On August 9, 2012, Pallavi, the daughter of an IAS officer was found murdered at her Wadala residence by her boyfriend Avik Sengupta who was living with her.

The Wadala police registered a murder case and following subsequent investigations, the Mumbai crime branch arrested Mogul, the watchman of the building Himalayan Heights where Pallavi resided.

After the judgement was pronounced Mogul stood expressionless. Pallavi's parents were also present in the court and said they are happy with the verdict. Her father Atanu Purkayastha said, "We are hoping for death penalty."

The crime branch filed a chargesheet in the case in October 2012, stating that Mogul who had an eye on Pallavi had tripped her electricity meter deliberately. When she later called an electrician, he accompanied the electrician to Pallavi’s residence and stealthily took the house keys.

Later he entered her house using the keys and tried to force himself on her. Pallavi put up a fight but he later ended up stabbing her and fled from the spot.

Avik, who deposed in the case, passed away due to natural causes in November last year.
