Speculation is rife in the city about Governor M K Narayanan’s resignation and departure from Kolkata in the week starting June 30.
Sources in the government told The Hindu that the Governor will leave the city on coming Friday and the employees and the workers of the Governor’s house will pay their farewell to Mr. Narayanan on Thursday. The Governor will send his resignation to the President before he leaves the city.
As per the custom, the Governor will be given a farewell on July 3 at Marble Hall, located on the ground floor of Raj Bhawan. Preparations are in full swing to make the farewell ceremony a memorable event.
Mr. Naraynan, who took over as the Governor of Bengal on January 24, 2010, will be felicitated by the employees of Raj Bhawan. On July 4, he will leave Kolkata, the sources told The Hindu. The Governor’s office, however, has not officially confirmed his resignation.
Mr. Narayanan’s resignation, which according to the sources, is ‘just a matter of time’, comes at a time when the 1955 batch IPS officer (retired) is facing a CBI inquiry into the purchase of VVIP helicopter from AgustaWestland.
Reportedly, Mr. Narayanan was ‘asked’ to resign a few days ago by Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami. Eventually, the former director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) decided to resign and leave Kolkata. The Raj Bhawan employees have started ‘making preparations accordingly’, said the sources.
