The Centre on Monday raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs 1.69 and 50 paise respectively.
In a statement, the chief minister said, "People overthrew the Congress-led government for its wrong fuel policy and gave a mandate to the BJP to rule. But the latest hike will cause immense harm to the common man due to increase in the prices of essential commodities."
The oil companies have cited strife in Iraq and the depreciation of the rupee as reasons for the hike in oil prices. These are temporary in nature and the government should reconsider its decision to hike fuel prices, she said.
The chief minister demanded a new fuel pricing policy after taking into consideration the import cost of fuel, refining and other costs. "The Prime Minister should intervene and reduce the prices of diesel and petrol," Jayalalithaa said.
