The meeting came on the back of a hectic first day in office for Modi that included bilateral meetings with SAARC nations, the first cabinet meeting of his government and a surprise social visit to his predecessor Manmohan Singh's new Motilal Nehru residence.
"The Prime Minister himself has hit the ground running from Day One. All of us will work equally hard to fulfill the great expectations of the election verdict that was based on hope," telecom and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told ET, when asked about the signals from the PM to ministers at the first cabinet meeting.
The cabinet on Tuesday had approved the creation of a Special Investigation Team to unearth black money parked in offshore accounts.
Modi used Wednesday's preliminary meeting with PMO officials to set a similar tone for the bureaucracy to deliver on the new government's goals. The meeting was attended by principal secretary Nripendra Misra, newly-appointed joint secretaries AK Sharma and Bharat Lal, along with other key officials in the PM's office.
"The Prime Minister indicated that he would like his office to consider issues, especially those raised by the States on priority and with sensitivity," an official statement from the PMO said. Modi told officials that India's progress lies in the progress of States and such an approach to partner with states would strengthen our federal structure.
Modi stressed upon the need to resolve people's grievances on a fast-track basis and emphasized the need to leverage modern technology for developing systems to effectively monitoring and resolve issues that are particularly brought to his office.
The PM 'also underscored the importance of addressing concerns raised by people's representatives personally or through Parliamentary procedures. He emphasized on team work to bring in good governance and encouraged officials to freely interact with him with their ideas,' according to an official communique from the PM's office.
Taking forward his recently articulated view that past governments have also done laudable work, the PM told officials that the PMO has evolved as an important institution and its best practices should be continued.
The cabinet was expected to meet again on Wednesday to discuss the dates of the first parliamentary session of the 15th Lok Sabha, but the meeting was re-scheduled for Thursday as several ministers were still taking charge of their departments.
Earlier in the day, Modi paid a visit to the Parliament House to pay a tribute to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary. "We remember and salute his tireless efforts towards the regeneration of our Motherland," the PM said on his Twitter account.
