Recently, Tesla added a Loot Box feature to its app, allowing customers to see whether friends and associates they’ve referred to the brand have made contact with the electric-car company regarding a new-vehicle purchase. As a ploy to motivate owners, the Loot Box offers incentives like free Supercharging, a kid-size Model S, and now, a 10 percent discount on a Founders Series Roadster.
At the end of 2016, Elon Musk noted that the follow-up to Tesla’s first car is “some years away,” and the company has never exactly been shy about paying its customers Tuesday for a hamburger today. Still, Musk has been somewhere between coy and upfront about performance numbers, suggesting/not suggesting that the acceleration goal for the next Roadster is in the neighborhood of 60 mph in two seconds on street tires. Which, if you’re following along at home, is quicker than the hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder that did the deed in 2.2 seconds.
Presumably this means that, unlike the previous rear-wheel-drive Roadster, the next car will find all four wheels scrabbling for purchase while one’s corneas are pinned to the back of one’s skull. But that, at the moment, is about all the information we can reliably offer. Perhaps, if you, the intrepid and charismatic Tesla owner, encourage enough friends to jump aboard the Musk train, Elon will throw further information your way.
For now, the Teslarati website reports, if you’ve encouraged enough friends to sign on the dotted line to unlock Level 1, winning a mere five further converts will unlock the discount on one of the first new Roadsters to roll off the line. Looks like it’s time to break out the ol’ soapbox.
