Dodge claims the new 2018 Durango SRT is the most powerful three-row SUV you can buy. Some horsepower-crazed Swabians in Affalterbach would prefer to point you, the power-hungry man who presumably has found himself in a family way, toward their Mercedes-AMG GLS63, which makes 577 horsepower to the Durango’s 475. Perhaps, in deference to their former masters at Daimler, the Dodge Boys should have noted that theirs is the most powerful three-row SUV available under $100,000, since the Merc starts north of $125K. Meanwhile, the 392 Hemi–powered Dodge enters the fray at a starting price of $64,090, or just about half the price of the superheated Mercedes.
Set to arrive at dealerships at the end of 2017, the 2018 Durango SRT is “the fastest, most powerful, and most capable SUV,” said Dodge. The division claims that it will hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds (a tenth slower than our GLS63 number), run the quarter-mile in 12.9 (also a tenth slower than we found the big Merc), and tow 8700 pounds, which is about three sport bikes more than the GLS is rated to pull. Slowing all that mass down is a set of big Brembo binders, featuring six pistons grabbing a 15-inch rotor at the front corners and four-piston calipers on either side of the rear axle, squeezing 13.8-inch discs. Slipped over the big brakes are 20-by-10-inch Goliath wheels featuring a low-gloss black finish, shod with Pirelli 295/45ZR-20 Scorpion Verde all-seasons or Pirelli P Zero performance tires. An alternate 20-inch split-five-spoke wheel is optional.
Other choices include a premium interior offering microsuede-wrapped A-pillars and headliner, carbon-fiber instrument panel trim and door bezels, and a hand-wrapped instrument panel with black and silver accent stitching. If you’d like, you can invoke a modicum of hell with Demonic Red leather seats or perhaps save yourself from a bit of same by occupying the kids with the rear DVD and technology group. For those who care to exploit the Durango’s towing capabilities, there’s a package for that, too.
Available colors include B5 Blue, Octane Red Pearl Coat, and five clear-coat shades: Billet, Bruiser Gray, Dark Black, Granite, and White Knuckle. As with the Demon, if you’re jonesing for B5 Blue, you’ll find yourself sitting on your hands; Dodge has that hue pegged for late availability. And finally, included with every SRT Durango purchase is a full day of high-performance-driving instruction at Bondurant’s facility in Chandler, Arizona. After all, if you can’t outpower the jerks in the Benzes who absconded with a chunk of your Dodge-given bragging rights, at least you can learn to outdrive them.
